I'm acting as intermediary on this as I am NOT the group's geek (doesn't speak English) so forgive me if I'm not totally clear!

It seems that we are stuck on trying to set up Jamstix in free jam mode.

It seems that jamstix starts off automatically before the midi lines set in and when they do start up jamstix does not seem to alter its pattern in any way apart from throwing in a drum roll every 8th bar. We don't seem to be able to get jamstix to 'follow' what we're playing in any way.

I can only presume that we are missing out on something in the setting up process. We had kind of imagined that jamstix would come in on the first note of the track and would then "follow" the general tone of the track. This is not happening.

When we use jamstix in ket word mode and manual mode there is no problem although we obviously still have a lot of discovering to do. Free Jam has us baffled even with the help of the manual.

Is there some critical setup issue that we have overlooked?

Firstly: make sure MIDI is reaching Jamstix. This is indicates by a little yellow LED in the bottom-right corner of Jamstix. It should light up in synch with your MIDI signal.

Secondly: By default, Jamstix will jam right away even if there is no MIDI signal. But once the signal kicks in it should create multiple patterns and line them up with your MIDI chords and also adjust velocity.

If you wish to have Jamstix wait for you before jamming the jam, use the 'Jam Start/Stop' in the jam tab to assign note that toggles jamming and check the box next to it to enable start/stop. JS will now wait for the MIDI input to show the trigger note before jamming.

This seems to be where the problem lies. The default start up is fine and we have worked out the start/stop procedure but Jamstix doesn't seem to make any variation in its start-off pattern once the midi signal kicks in.

What kind of MIDI signal are you feeding? Jamstix expects chords so if you are feeding a single melodic line it will not work.
