I'm trying to quick fade the end of my song. For example, a midi bass note that I let play on, but it didn't fade naturally fast enough. When I just cut the track off it sounds to abrupt even though it was left plenty long enough. So - two questions:
1. Are there diffferent ways to end/fade ending notes so it sounds like a natrual ending? Should I slow fade (We're just talking about an ending note here - not a song fade) or can a more abrupt fade sound like a natural ending???? Then, to get more Jamstix specific, I'm going to have to do the same thing with the ending crash that continues to ring out. What is the most natural sounding way to end that?
2. This is the question that prompted this posting. I tried fading the volume (SL1). At the point where I start the line there seems to be a slight burst of volume before fading and there is a slight crackling sound throughout the fade. Any suggestions?

A couple of more questions while I'm at it.
I have been wondering how I go about starting off a song softer with jamsticks and then building (In an arranged song - I understand velocity will adjust with midi or audio imput.) If I want the first verse to play softer, for example, I can't just turn the volocity slider down and then up for chorus, louder for ending, etc., because the arrangement does not save this information - am I correct on this? It seems that the whole arrangement will play at whatever velocity the slider on at the time.
I believe I read in answer to someone else's question that this adjustment would have to be made in the host's automation track. So I routed a blank midi track out to Jamstix. Adjusted the "velocity shift" perameter - up, down - used write automation, read automation, etc. no change watsoever. I'm sure someone can quickly tell me where I'm going wrong. I first thought that setting up a blank midi track and sending it out to Jamstix may not be the right way to aproach tihs whole thing - though I found that the volume perameter did affect jamstix.
NEXT QUESTION. When writing automation for the volume perameter (just for expermentation / learning sake) I found that write did not work until I got up aroud bar 24. Doe this make sense to anyone? After that it would write and read the automation fine.
Thanks for listening - I know there's a lot of people out there with more experience with this stuff than me.

Concerning automation: the trick is to add an automation envelope on the 'Velocity' parameter of Jamstix (not 'Velocity Shift'). It's the first parameter, right before 'Chance - Kick Before Quarter'. Now shape the envelope as needed. Writing automation does not work in Jamstix, we believe envelopes are the best way. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

O.K. This just opened up a whole new world to me. First of all, I just clicked on the "W" on the top of Jamstix for the first time, and opened what I guess is an envelope in Cubase. Secondly I have no Idea what the diference is between automation and envelopes - but I am guessing I am on the right track. the "envelope" that opened when I clicked write in Jamstix is similar to the "automation" parameters I was playing with on my Cubase tracks, except Jamstix adds it to my track list. Thirdly, I find on page 49 of the Jamstix manual, under "using midi automation" that many parameters can be automated in my sequencer - a whole new way of controling Jamstix! Are there any reasons why I would want to set parameters (such as probabilities) this way instead of when I am creating my arrangement?
Just another encouragement for more info in the manual. I had read it all -I just had no Idea what this part was all about. Even on this page (using midi automation) there is no connection made with the read / write buttons. We are told ". . . you can use the velocity perameter to manually control the velocity of jamstix during a song", but there are no instructions as to how to do so. Just a thought - I know you've got a lot on your plate - and it's all apreciated!
Thanks,
Geoff
(By the way - Cubase users - answers to my other Cubase questions still desired) |

You'd use envelopes when you want to change things during a song, especially when you want to do it incrementally.

I understand but there are many hosts that Jamstix can be used with and they all do automation differently so we simply have to refer users to their hosts instructions on automation envelopes. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
