Hello all! I recently heard of jamstix and downloaded the demo version, I really like what I'm seeing so far and am planning on purchasing the whole package, but I have a few question that I hope you can answer for me first.

1) I am using Sonar Home Studio 4(only about a month now) and am completely midi-illiterate. I was able to use the VST wrapper and inserted a Dxi track, which opened a midi track and four audio output tracks. I played around with the arranger and built a basic drum track, I'm confused on how to get this information into the tracks of Sonar. I can play back the drum sounds, but there is no midi info or audio info in the tracks for me to manipulate or bounce down. As I said, I'm completely green when it comes to anything midi!

2) In order to hear play back of my drum track, JS requires a running host. I like to start my jam sessions with the drum track first, and Sonar won't play without any info in the tracks, so I just record a blank track for a couple of minutes and that works. Is there an easier way of doing this?

3) I'm reading alot on the website that says JS is compatible with BFD and DFH. I know absolutely nothing about either of those programs, but they are expensive and require an awful lot of harddisk space. If someone owned one of those programs, why would they want to use this one? Don't those programs come with arranging software? Sorry if this sounds stupid, but I'm really new to this!

4) Can JS create doublebass patterns, like hardcore metal and the like?

These are just a few of the questions that I have, I really want get aquainted with the program before I purchase it. Initially, it looked quite confusing, but I think I understand the basics now. I've been using .wav loops until now, but I think that this might give me a lot more control of my drum tracks. I reallly hope that this is what I think it is! Thanks in advance for any help that you can offer!

The good news is that there is rarely a need to transfer this data into Sonar. You can develop the arrangement within Jamstix (all data saves into the Sonar project automatically) right until final mixdown of the project to audio.

If you do feel the need to hand-edit the MIDI data, you'd use 'Export MIDI File' in the arranger tab to get a MID file that you can then import into Sonar.

Audio manipulation is done via the FX bin of the 4 audio outputs in Sonar.

I think play ranges work too. You can also add a single dummy MIDI event to the Jamstix MIDI track at Bar 200 or so and Sonar will then happily play toward it.

DFHS does not come with any arranger function or rhythm generator. BFD comes with a library of MIDI loops but does not have rhythm generation, arrangement, jamming etc.

That's why many people with these libraries use Jamstix to 'drive' them.

4) Can JS create doublebass patterns, like hardcore metal and the like?

It can do it down to 16-th patterns but 32nd note patterns can only be done as fills or accents. This will be expanded on in Jamstix 2.

Please continue to check out the demo, there is a lot under the hood and various different workflows are possible. I'm here to answer any questions.

I'm going to be purchasing the full package tommorow( probably in the morning before work), I was wondering, when version 2 comes out, will I recieve an upgrade at a substantial discount or should I wait to buy the latest version.

Jamstix 2 will be released at the end of this year at the earliest. Jamstix 1.x owners will be offered update pricing with roughly 50% off the full price.

I just purchased the jamboree package(5:20am), I can't wait 'til I get off work today!

I purchased Sonar Home Studio 4 about a month or so ago, in addition, I bought a book called SonarPower, that book really helped to get me going in the right direction.

I was thinking that it would be really nice if there was an equivalent for JS. I understand that JS's UI is relatively understandable but, it would be really cool if someone would write a downloadable E-book describing a few different workflows and cover a few of the common problems for new comers! I'm sure all of the info is probably somewhere here in the forum, but it would be nice to have a step by step guide to get newbies going in the right direction! I really love this program, it's what I've been searching for, for a long time! I think a lot more people would be onboard if it seemed a little more approachable.

I'd be willing to bet that one of the master users here could write a book like this, covering all aspects, in a day or two! I'd buy it!

Wow! Laughing This thing is absolutely awesome! Laughing I didn't realize exactly what I was getting until now! I loaded up all of the packs and started to play around, I'm blown away!

I loaded up a basic rhythm and then played around with the outputs, then I loaded up all of the differrent mappings! This thing is absolutely amazing! I feel like I have a professional drummer with a studio full of drums living in my computer! I am one completely happy customer! I can't wait until I have a complete grasp of all that is possible and figure out the best workflow for my projects. I'm definetly going to be telling people about this!

"just play with it", I'm going to! Laughing
