I started recording a mini-album for a band before X-mas.
We tracked the drums with my Dm5 'digi-kit' using BFD as the primary sample sound module.

Yesterday the drummer came back to completely redo the drums on one song... I suggested that instead of Using BFD we route the digi-kit to Jamstix... The DP#2 close mic snare sounded so clear and present and really allowed him to play with feel. Apart from recording such a great snare and capturing it so well, I feel you must have a really good understanding of how to 'calibrate' the samples so that they respond to velocity so wonderfully.

Anyway... I don't want to rubbish all the DP#2 kit pieces as they are fine enough... but we ended up using the BFD kit for Kick, Toms and cymbals... but there is no way we would have wanted to use BFD for the snare... once the drummer had hear the DP#2 snare he was SOLD!

Now the final drum track sounds like a cross between the sound that Chad Smith (Red Hot Chilli Peppers) gets and the snare fills sound like Ringo Starr from the Let It Be to Abbey Road period (This is a GOOD THING!!!)

Ralph... I am ready to buy the new snare pack today... and I am dreaming of the individual snare packs becoming reality!!

Today I mixed the song with the Jamstix DP#2 close mic'd snare..

It sat so easy in the mix and really didn't need any EQ, compression or reverb.
I did roll the slightest bit of high frequency off it so that the snare could sit where I wanted in the mix and in the end I put a little bit of room sound on it by way of the WAVES IR-1 using the El Dorado impulse.. so it matched my BFD kick and Toms..

But.. I would have been happy for it to go onto CD with NO processing at all... and that is the CLOSE MIC'd snare... thats how good it is!

The snare is in the mix as a stereo channel.

You all may have noticed it already but the latest beta has stereo width control for those times where the drum image is supposed to be narrower. Furthermore, we added a shaping control that allows you to alter the ambience sound by reducing the delay between close mic and ambient mic (sound travel).

This can be used to achieve interesting acoustics. For example: use DrumPak #2, set stereo width 1/3 from the left, shaping to the middle position and ambience to the middle position. You know have a narrow, tight kit where the ambience sound is 'convoluted' with the close mic sound. I like this set-up for harder rock.

How can we set up a kit that have BFD for everything and DP#2 for snare? I also love DP#2 snares, but right now have been using BFD since I don't know how to add the snares from DP to BFD.

I use Cubase SX2...
I set up 2 vst instruments (BFD and Jmastix).
Then I set up two midi channels...(one for BFD.. one for Jamstix)

You have to go into BFD and in the panel that is represented with the keyboard icon... you go into there and 'un-tick' any kit components that youi plan not to use... in this case untick all the snare components.... this will save some computer resources and also means you won't have to 'mute' the snare channel from BFD.

Then go into JAMSTIX mapping tab and disconnect every sample except for the snare samples... this takes some time as there is no easy way to do this like there is in BFD...

Now I have just realized this is how I do it for recording with my 'e-drums'..

But for using Jamstix as the sound generating device (or 'brain') you would do this same procedure but after you had composed the drum track using JAMSTIX... you would then output the jamstix data as midi... copy it so that it is on two midi tracks and go about and set up on track with BFD and one track as Jamstix as I explained at the top of this post.
