|

Hey folks,
Just starting to get my head around Jamstix. I love the drum sounds and the included rhythms. However, the jam-along functions don't seem well suited to my style (lots of breaks and changes). I think the engine would need to analyze my finished song structure to generate something good; it's not predictable enough to do it in real time (a human drummer would have to do the same thing).
Because of this, I tend to write with Jamstix as a step-sequencer/loop manager app in manual jam mode. I want it to play a static loop with no variations, so I set funkiness/complexity to 0. However, each rhythm I load has all the variance, accents and crash settings set to a rather high amount by default, and I have to turn them all down. Is there an easy way to insist that Jamstix only play exactly what the rhythm says with no variations?
Once I'm done arranging though, I would like Jamstix to add some variations to give some breath to things. Would I just increase the variations levels a bit, reset the red blocks in the arrangement, and keep running through the song, locking the bits I liked and resetting those I don't? Is there maybe a completely different approach that's better?
Lastly, are the funkiness and complexity settings applied before Jamstix makes the variation decisions that you can lock down in the arragement, or can they be applied afterward?
Thanks so much - this is a really great forum. |

I would not turn funk/comp to zero. Those sliders do not affect the rhythm but the accent and fill selection. I would also not turn down the variance sliders as they cause realistic velocity changes and not affect the actual rhythm played. What you want to do is turn down the snare and tom accent sliders as well as the cymbal sliders.
In the demo you have to do this everytime you load a rhythm. In the current full version beta, a checkbox has been added to the 'Load Rhythm' dialog to keep the slider settings where you left them if you so wish.

Yes, you would raise the snare and/or tom accent sliders. No need to reset anything in the arrangement as changing the slider(s) already does this.
In the full version beta, we have added optional manual selection of snare and tom accents so you can let Jamstix do its thing and then go to specific bars and either suppress the accent or change it to something else.

Changing funkiness/complexity causes accents and fills to potentially be changed as they may no longer go through the associated filters so I'd recommend to make the comp/funk slider decisions early and then leave them alone.
There is also a ini file switch to cut off comp/funk filtering if you so choose. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
