Ralph,
I noticed that there is now a folder under the Jamstix folder called "X423Full"
It has an "Accents", "Mappings" and "Manual" folder under it as well as jamstix.dll dated 21/7/2005.
So now I have 2 jamstix.dlll files and also 2 of the above folders but in different places...
Should I copy the contents of the X423 folder tothe other folders under my Jamstix directory?
Can I delete the older jamstix.dll from the Jamstix folder so I don't get 2 instances appearing in my VSTi list?
thanks,
Rich |

Sorry about that. Yes, please move the contents of the X423 folder to the Jamstix folder. We will correct the downloads immediately. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hi Ralph
I am getting a bit confused since the "new folder" thing.
In CubaseSX3, when I open an existing project with Jamstix already in use, and if I start a new project and add Jamstix as a VSTi, not ALL the fills and intro's etc are available to select.
If I then close jamstix (ie remove it from the VST list) then re select Jamstix as a VST instrument, all the fills and intro's are there.
I have one "accent" folder with 211 objects, but the more recent folders in the update have 58 or 59.
Is 211, the correct amount of raf files in the accent folder, I need to make sure before I delete the other accent folders?
regards
john
PS still enjoying Jamstix, and replacing all my old drum track with it. _________________ john-studio64

The number of F/I/E available in the list depends on the funkiness, complexity and shuffle controls. That's why you are seeing different lists in different sessions.
If you do not like this feature, you can disable it by adding NoAccentFiltering=1 to the [General] section of your jamstix.ini

That's the correct number for the 1.3 beta. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Zauni,
First let me say I have been using Jamstix for 4-5 weeks and it has already revolutionized my drum tracks. I am getting excellent and realistic results when teamed with dfh Superior. Thank you for providing a miracle alternative to midi programming.
My primary usage is building drum tracks for original tunes. I have been using the arranger to piece together different rythms, intros, fills, etc. into complete drum tracks for my tunes. While using the application I have noted several suggestions that I believe would smooth the workflow and save time. If any can already be accomplished using the current release, please enlighten me. Otherwise, please consider them as enhancement suggestions.
1) Need the ability to save arrangements. I understand that the midi export function is the only way to get the notes that are played, all I am after are ryhtm choices, fill/intro/ending choices, plus measure and change information. This would allow saving of an arrangement per song in case you needed to rebuild the midi drum track from within Jamstix....otherwise it becomes a mandatory pencil and notepad activity.
2) There needs to be options for controlling the output of the midi export function. By the time Jamstix has played through a tune enough times to really learn it and get tight......the midi file that gets exported is huge and confusing because it keeps all notes since the host last opened. What is really needed is an option for exporting a midi file with only data from the last play-thru of the song by Jamstix. This would allow Jamstix to finetune itself over several iterations and give the user time to reset measures that don't work well. Then simply play through one last time and export the midi file with this new option turned on. Ideally the midi file would match the start point of the sequencer also. Now I just create the midi file, put my cursor at the start point in the sequencer, import the midi file.........done.....no searching for the right meaures in the midi file.....no searching for the right start point. Without this capability I am finding this part of the process a very frustrating and time consuming task.
3)When auditioning rythms for manual mode, it would be helpful if the rythm pick list defaulted to the last rythm selected. If auditioning through all the rythms trying to find a perfect match, it is time consuming and extra mouse clicks to start at the top everytime and have to scroll down to where you left off. This would also be helpful if you lose track and can't remember your last selection.
4)A 'zoomed out' or 'full arrangement' view in the arranger would be helpful for spot-checking rythm change consistency across the entire arrangement, rather than having to scroll left or right a bit at a time in the window.
5) A dfh Superior mode option for the interface would be great. What I mean by this is a config setting that would strip the GUI interface down to only the functions and options that are active and relevent to a user running Jamstix integrated with dfh Superior. This would streamline the interface in a major way for those users. In addition, it would eliminate confusion concerning what functions only apply to using the internal sound engine as opposed to an external engine or both.
6)I would prefer a metronome option with no voice at all.....not even on the 1 count. I would rahter use an accent beat on the one count. I find the voice distracting.
7)An option to choose half-measure long intros/fills/endings rather than be limited to only the full measure options would add flexibility.
8)The manual is jam heavy and drum track building lite in terms of content. Real examples of recommended workflows for building Jamstix drum tracks and then incorporating them into your senquecer would really help to diminish the learning curve.
Hope these suggestion make sense and that you will agree with some or all of them. This is a phenomenal application will loads of potential into the future. I believe one key focus will be to cater to the needs of the song writer building custom drum tracks using the arranger........nothing else I've seen yet comes close to Jamstix......but the arranger needs some more attention in this area. It needs to be workflow optimized, there needs to be more control and the output of the midi export files need to be predictable and consistent.
Thanks you for your hard work and a very innovative program.
Regards,
Ross Elliott

All excellent suggestions, and some of them I've been hoping for as well. I've been using NS_kit7 full with Halion Player as well as the internal sounds and it's completely altered my rhythm tracks (for the better). Jamstix- best music app for 2005!
David
PS- I'd like to see an option for increasing measure length for things like kick and snare, independent of HH. I'd also be happy if nothing ever changed in Jamstix. |

You can use the 'Load/Save Bank' functions of your host to save arrangements.

Sounds like a bug. MIDI export should reset when the host starts playing.
We'll look into it next week.

We'll see what we can do. Also, did you see the note icon? It lets you preview rhythms without having to close/reopen the dialog.

Well.....I got this out of the manual and the explanation seems to jive in general with what I am seeing in my midi export files. " The Export Midi File button saves all events of the last jam session since the host was started last to a standard midi file".

Well I suggested this partially because I am not crystal clear whether some of the functions only apply to the internal sound engine or not. Some examples are:
1) pretty much everything on the Outputs tab
2) On Mapping tab......internal sound engine options would go away and would default to previous/saved setting used by the external dfh Superior engine.
Did you not have any comments on my suggestions 6, 7 and 8? |

Hi Ralph,
Some issues I've encountered with the latest beta:
1. It seems that the latest beta does not work at all in Chainer (earlier versions did)
2. Each time I load a Cubase project I keep having to load mapping profile to get any sound (in this case, "jamstix piccolo"), and have to reassign outputs.
3. How about ability to group samples for assignment to output? For examples, assign "snare" to output and all the variations are automatically assigned to same output. Same with Toms. Maybe there is a way to do this as a default, and I missed the class...
PS - "Character" is a GREAT idea! It would be amazing if this could expand to pick different "brains" |

I have also found a good workaround for this problem. On my system the midi export file does indeed continuously append data for each play-thru. However, I thought when I closed the host and reopened it, that Jamstix would lose the groove it had adapted on play thrus. I found this not to be the case. Here is what worked for me.
1) Play thru several times letting Jamstix get a groove and resetting measures to be relearned as needed.
2) Once satisfied, close the host and reopen.
3) Set the play position in the host to the correct insert point.
4) Play through one time and export midi.
5) Import the newly created midi file at the same insert point.
My results.......Jamstix exported the one play through only, matching the exact host starting point. It did remember the groove it had adapted, exactly as it should have from all my original play thrus of the tune. Problem solved.

You were correct, I had not checked out the note icon function.....it works nicely and makes my suggestion #3 much less of a concern.
Thanks.......Ralph. That's 3 out of 8 suggestions that are now moot points. |

Not all FIEs are full measure length. For fills and endings, Jamstix layers the data on top of the rhyhtm and switches to semi hats. This may make you think its fill data when in fact it is still the rhythm. We will add an option in an update to suppress the semi hat switch and will also add a display in the FIE screen so you can see at what point of the measure the sequence actually starts.
Jamstix 2 will have a custom fill generator where you can specify start and end points.

Agree. If only the days had more than 24 hours...
We hope to be able to enrich the manual soon. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
