So to some extent my midi file has to 'track' the structure of my piece?

So if I have 8 bars of midi and a song with a 4 bar verse followed by a 4 bar chorus it'll use the first 4 bars of the midi file as the basis of the verse and the next four as the basis of the chorus?

[As an aside, have been on jamstix since release 1, just upgraded to 4 from 3 and think the new version is a huge leap up in terms of functionality and ease of use]

No, that's not how it works. In your example, you would create 2 4-bar MIDI files, one for the verse and one for the chorus. Now create two 4-bar parts in the JS4 song sheet, use 'Import' style and use the verse MID file in one part and the chorus file for the other part.

Thank you!!

Okay - how do I create multiple 'parts' in this way? Because if I import multiple times it just overwrites the previous setting. I assume what is meant to happen is that like in the diagram on page 12 of the Manual, lower left in the song builder, I'm able to create multiple user defined sections of my own in here ?

Incidentally, I am also able to select Import via the "Build" Tab by selecting drum style - but in this case once I click 'Load Style' nothing appears to happen.

I'm new and I've been trying to figure all this out too. If I understand correctly;

In the 'Song builder', you set your initial song structure etc. and choose 'import' from the styles. Then click create.

Then when you've done that you look at the 'Groove' section & you can see the 'Song Sheet' on the left of the 'Brain' window. Clicking on the various elements eg Verse, chorus, shows the different Brain modules for each section.

So click on verse to load the MIDI for that, and clicking on the chorus you can load a different MIDI file for that (or saved groove or whatever). Any linked parts will also be affected.

Dunno if that helps ?

Thanks hotmitts_1 that makes more sense (though I think the fact that the dialogues being identical are somewhat misleading -- perhaps it should say 'Pick Style' instead of 'Load Style' as matter of contrast?).

I notice that if I have several verses they get labelled consecutively in the SongSheet (Verse 1, Verse 2 etc), but I only get a single part labelled (Verse 1) in the Song Builder -- and from the perspective of the Groove section all of the Song Sheet parts link to to the single Song Builder part (if that makes sense).

If you don't want that, uncheck 'Condense Parts' in the song builder before building.

If you don't want that, uncheck 'Link Parts' in the song builder before building.

Excellent, thank you for that - I had already read that and assumed it only applied to the generated patterns.
