if anyone's still reading this thead...

i've experimented a bit with changing the drum types (switching snares, or kicks, for example) and then tweaking the parameters.

it actually showed me a pretty huge range of sounds. considering how new i am to digital drumming, i don't think i need more, at least for a while. again, another impressive feature from Jamstix. maybe i don't know what i'm missing but i'm pretty pleased.

quick question: can i use the default kit from Cubase (lm-7 i believe) in Jamstix? i'm sure it's just a question of mapping, right? something else i have to play with.

i have yet to try taking a Jamstix drum sound and try processing it in Cubase, adding reverbs, etc. this should be fun and i'll try it this weekend. (i'm very new at all this and stuff like routing isn't intuitive for me yet so i'll have to take some time to figure it out, as basic as it seems to the rest of you.).

thanks.

Jason

You can't use LM7 in Jamstix because it only runs within Steinberg hosts but you can load LM7 into the Cubase rack and then add a MIDI track and set input=Jamstix and output=LM7 to make Jamstix play LM7.

Jamstix and DFHSuperior 1.5 hands down. If you know what to do with raw drum parts you cannot go wrong. I have BFD & XFL also and use it now and again for a change but superior is the ultimate raw, perfectly recorded drum kit.....but you have to have some skills to make it work in a mix and get the "production" sound happening.

Jamstix + Superior 1.5 + UAD plaugs for processing = sweet drum tracks that you can't pick from the real thing !

hey guys.

just figured out how to output single drum elements and process them. i'm sure this will give me great flexibility with sounds.

what compression and reverb plugins can people recommend? i've got Cubase 1 and read it's verb is kinda low-grade.

(i'm and eBay-aholic and love to spend money before i make it if you haven't figured it out. Smile )

but to repeat, i'm pleasantly surprised at the variety of sounds i can get by just changing kit elements and tweaking parameters. i'm sure once i get used to processing them in Cubase, i'll be amazed.

thanks.

Guru, sorrry but i don't get your statement.

i've looked the thread up and down and don't see mentions of any specific plugins (i'm aksing for specific brand names and titles) other than:

"UAD plaugs for processing "

sorry, but i'm not sure what you're saying. i've read all the repsonses and appreciate the points of view regarding DFH and BFD, etc., but now i'm thinking for the next little while i don't want the learning curve of new drum software as the Jamstix sounds are pretty good now that i can tweak parameters withting Jamstix, like ambience, pitch and sustain.

if there was specific mention of reverb or compression, sorry i don't see it.

that's all i'm asking. with the hopes that a good verb and/or compression plugin will be all i need for a while.

hope that made sense.

Hey Jason...

There are a few good free utilities out there...

Take a look at the Kjaerus Classis series. They have a pretty good compressor and reverb vst's.

You might also want to take a look at the DigitalFishPhones stuff.

I would also suggest you get the Posihfopit eq and Ambience reverb.

You can find all this over at www.kvraudio.com

thanks, Darcy.

wow, these are all free?

i can't help but be a little suspicious of free software; what's in it for them/the catch?

but i'll have to check it out.

for what it's worth, i don't mind spending some bucks (not hundreds, though) on good plug-ins.

but if you think these free titles do a great job, then that's great.

thanks.

Some of the free stuff is VERY excellent. You can't go wrong there, if the reverb or EQ doesn't sound right to you, just chuck it. Nothing to lose, much to gain Smile

great to know, guys. thanks.

i'm still curious at to why, exactly, companies will give away quality software.

are they stripped-down versions and they're hoping you'll like it enough to pay for the full version?

just wondering.

cheers.

Sometimes they have two levels of the product, a basic and advanced. Basic is free, advanced costs some bucks. Giving away the basic is great advertising for the advanced. If the basic is great, think how good the advanced must be. Sometiimes the difference is something like the basic would be a fantastic EQ but the product for sale is a fantastic british sounding EQ with one extra parameter or ability for automation or something.

Sometimes a programmer just wants to have something to put in their portfolio. If an aspiring programmer wants to get work for someone like Steinberg, Waves, etc. it would be great to put on the resume, "I made the such and such EQ plugin which to date has over five million downloads and people are raving about it."

There is a lot free stuff out there. The ones I mentioned are the best from my experience and do as much as I need therm to do. The Kjaerhus stuff is great but they also have a gold series which is purchaseable item. Outside of my DAW (Traction) I have only purchased Jamstix.

You might want to look at some the Voxengo stuff as well. They have some pretty good free products as well as very economical purchase products. If you are willing to spend some time experimenting you should be able to get the sound you want without having to spend a lot.

I use BFD and love it. Fxpansion are about to release a hyper detailed rock expansion pack to go with the new version 1.5. Word is they got some artists kits. They wont say who yet.
