So guys, how I would I get it to play something nice and laid back, (think early Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler, like the Raven demo) - I got it playing stuff to me, but it sounded like Omar Hakim on acid

I recommend you go to the rhythm tab, click 'Load', click the note icon to enable previewing and then click on rhythms in the right list. As you click, Jamstix will start playing them. Use the key words on the left to narrow down the list. Try key words like 'basic' or 'simple' to get some rhythms you may like.
Another approach is to let JS free jam some stuff for you. Click 'Free jam' in the jam tab and then set some controls as follows:
- Complexity almost left
- Funkiness all the way left
- Accentuation almost left
- Cymbal Hits all the way left
- Fill Frequency all the way left
This should give you a nice basic groove. Now experiment with the controls and see what happens. For example:
- raise funkiness and complexity
- change the snare and hihat style
- change the 'character'
Another nice way to experiment is to unlock the Funkiness and Complexity panels in the Style panel and then play with setting different values for kick, snare and hats. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
