Just released beta X9-2, which adds an icon next to the fill frequency slider that will give you a few filter options to adapt fill playback to your needs.
One filter prohibits the fill from starting until beat 3 or 4. Another can route either all toms or toms 1 and 2 to the snare and the third filter will always suppress the underlying rhythm for the duration of the fill.
Let me elaborate on the last part: by default, Jamstix will always try to play a fill on top of the rhythm as much as is limb-wise possible. This of course increases the complexity of the resulting performance. Some fills are programmed to suppress the rhythm but this new switch will allow you to set it globally for all fills.
Let me know if this helps in 'taming' the fills.
Noter: the filters are stored for each song separately but whatever the settings are when you click OK is also stored as the new default. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Would I assume correctly that the settings cannot be changed for each fill? In other words, does the arranger "record" each fill the way it is played so that the filter could be changed or turned off for a different fill in the arrangement? Or are the fills just assigned in the arranger in their original form, and filtered as they are played (thus the filter would be either on for all fills in an arrangement, or off for all)?

The filters affect all fills. However, you can lock a bar down in the arranger and then change the filter and the locked bar will stay the same. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

OK. I see see I need to explore this locking feature. Obviously significant!

The core issue is that JS 1.5 does not allow you to filter the fills and accents directly. We are planning a key word system, much as we now have on rhythms, for JS 2. You will be able to pick 'simple' or 'basic' as key words or use prohibiting keys, like NOT 'busy' etc.
JS 2 is quite a ways off so for now you can only fix it by manually selecting 'tamer' fills, like the ones that start with 'BASIC'. If we get a chance, we will try to add simpler fills in a free update just to increase the options for the time being. |
I just want to keep this fresh. There was a lot of agreement with this issue in this thred. Adding those simpler fills would still be appreciated.
Ralph, you addressed the concern very quickly with your filter, and I applaud you for your fast response and customer care.
However, I feel that while this was a quick solution (which may indeed have long-term value in Jamstix), it does not really address the lack of simpler fills. Suppressing the fill before beat 3 or 4 may be helpful in some cases, but does not give full, simple fills.
I know there are a few "basic" fills - however, it is limiting (unlike the spirit of Jamstix) to keep using the same 2 or 3 fills all the time.
Most of the fills are so busy - I don't even know what's going on with the toms on some of them, they don't sound realistic. Hey, I listen to the radio - you don't hear that stuff comming from any of these top producers / drummers.
By the way, simple doesn't necessarily mean slow, or just two hits and a crash. I'm not a drummer at all, and I don't know how to explain it, but perhaps we need more fills with hits just on 1/4s or 1/8s, or even 1/6ths or triplets - but some of the toms I hear I wonder if it could even be played with just two sticks. What is it on tom 1 in so many of these fills? is it bounce I hear? To my ears it doesn't belong. There's a lot of business in the hi toms - I don't know how to explain it.
That's on slower tempos. On faster tempos, most of the fills are just too fast. I think a drummer would have do less hits per beat at 160 than if he was playing at 80 right. So we may need some fills that are are slower (less hits) so they sound realistic at highter tempos.
Anyway, I've been thinking about this eversince the filter was created. I didn't want to seem unappreciative so I left it for a while, planning to bring this up again at some point. So here it is The filter's great - but not a total solution.
Thanks,
Geoff |

Duly noted, Geoff. We are having a two-pronged approach here:
a) long-term solution in Jamstix 2 via a fill generator.
b) short-term fix for Jamstix 1.x via more standard fills in one of the next updates _________________ Ralph Zeuner

All the simple stuff you can think of will be much appreciated here by an old roots rocker ...
Doesn't mean I don't enjoy jamming to a nice latin groove from time to time !
Happy Easter to you, Ralph !

This may be more complex than you are wanting to do, but until an update fixes this problem, you can always once you have everything but the accents in your jamstyx song just the way you want it, do an export to midi function on the arranger page. It would be helpful to write down on what measure you put each accent in the song in jamstyx. Then in the drum editor of your sequencer open the midi file, fast forward to each measure where you placed an accent and then erase notes you do not like. Example if you had a 4 beat drum fill erase all fill notes from beat three and four, or start on measure one and erase fill notes on measure one and two making it into a simpler two beat fill. Hope this helps until they work out a way to easily do this with some type of filter or different accents in Jamstyx. Be patient though because I have not had this program for long but it has been very easy for me to see in a short time that they are working amazingly fast at changing and adding all things we are asking for, and the most amazing part that makes it so different than other software I own, they are not having to work on bugs like other companies support where (even if they will work on the bugs or even acknowledge you sent them an email about it) that make the software not even work the way it was desinged making the program to frustrating to work with because they released the program before it was ready: instead the program at least for me has worked rock solid and what they are working their tails off at Jamstyx doing is listening to Extra things we all want that would make the program even better for the way we use it. Thanky Rayzoon guys for a great job.
May God Bless Your Day,
Russell |

I agree with Dinoman
More simple fills on snare and toms.
Simple... simple.... simple...
(That's why I use accents more than fills).
I think the combination of what Dinoman's saying (more simple fills)
What acabreira is saying (Left mouse increase of velocity on fills)
my idea (Lugs in arrange window to tag which bar has an accent on it)
And your idea of having the Rythym sets...
All together will make Jamstix MUCH more powerful as far as being able to quickly create arrangements with fills and accents that a real drummer would play.
I think when we get these four features implemented It'll be a day to really celebrate!
