I have all the JS3XL kits/expansions (except for mini-paks). Just bought the JS4 upgrade. I will be using the offline installer mode.

Does the JS4 installer automatically download all this stuff again, or can I re-use the sample and AI files I already have?

Reason I ask, I have a 10G/month data cap, after which speed drops to 2G (unusable for large downloads). So depending on the answer I may need to wait a couple of weeks before downloading.

thanks

Hi, You can re-use the JS3 sound files with JS4 (it is one of the installation options) but the AI files will have to be updated. Unfortunately I can't remember my initial JS4 download and whether I could pick and choose what to download or if I had to download it all at once. Checking the Use Jamstix 3 Sounds checkbox in Install Options will avoid downloading the stock sound files again. They are the same in JS4 anyway.

It would probably be a good idea to send an email to supportATrayzoonDOTcom and ask Ralph directly about your situation. Sorry that I can't give you a more definitive answer.

The offline installer cannot handle that specific situation, unfortunately. Another option would be download at another location in offline mode.

OK thanks. Not having to dl the stock kits again is good. I'm used to juggling data cap vs downloads vs connect speed, life as usual out here in the sticks.

I'm guessing the whole JS4XL minus JS3 stock kits download would be less than 2GB, is that in the ballpark?

If you go through, right before you would hit 'Start Install', you will see the total download size shown.

ah, good. Looks like the whole package including the JS3 sounds is just under 2GB.

It's not letting me select "use JS3 sounds" probably because they're not installed on this machine. In any case I can wait a couple of weeks to install it.

thanks again

And some related questions:

In the Manager, I selected "use Jamstix 3 sound data" (I have Jamstix 3 Xl and the expansion packs) and clicked OK.

On the Start Installation page, the New Files Available is shown as ~101MB.
Q1: Is that the software itself and the new sounds (are there any)?

But the 5 Pak lines are all shown as "Install" (not "Update" OR "Up-to-date".

Q2: Does that mean that the Manager will download the 101MB and install that into the relevant folders and then copy across all my Jamstix 3 Data into the Jamstix 4 Data folder, creating duplicates?

Q3: Or is the Jamstix 4 software designed to reference both Data folders?

Q4: Shouldn't the AI Pak be marked as "Update"?

Q5: Is there any way to save the download for reinstallation later? (Yep, I'm looking at you, Native Access Wink)

A1: Yes, the Manager will download whatever is required for the upgrade except the Sound libraries since you specified to use your JS3 sounds.

A2: No it will not create duplicates. It will use the JS3 sounds from their present location.

A3: No only the location you specified for it to use. With JS3 & JS4 installed side by side, each would access their assigned sound folders.

A4: I'm not sure but the Manager should download any needed updates as far as I know.

A5: The downloaded data is saved in the C:\ProgramData\Jamstix 4 Data\cache folder for repair purposes.

Thank you.

But A2 and A3 seem inconsistent. If the installer does not duplicate the JS3 sounds into the JS4 sounds folder, how does JS4 get to them?

Jamstix 4 will access the Jamstix 3 sound library in its installed location if the "Use JS3 Sounds Option" is chosen during install and not create duplicates.

Sorry I wasn't very clear in A3, I was referring to JS3 & JS4 both being installed and NOT sharing sound files. If JS4 is installed with its own sound files, it will not utilize the JS3 sound files at all. Hope this is clearer.

wow, ~101MB, that's quite a difference -- I think I was taking "stock kit" too literally. So all sounds including expansions in a JS3 installation are re-used?

If that's the case then it'd be worth temporarily installing JS3 to the downloading machine, that'd save ~1.8GB, data cap would be a non-issue.

So to set up an offline install, the installer needs to see what? Just the sound file directories? A full JS3 installation?

It would need to see a full JS3 install but the offline mode does not package local JS3 files. Offline mode will always package from online.

So if the JS directory structure is identical on the downloading and target machines, it will work with the ~101MB download?

You could just do an AI-only install and then manually copy all RZD files from the 'sounds' folder of a JS3 machine to the JS4 machine.

OK, thanks. I will consider the options here, and choose the least painful Wink

Not really complaining, I kind of understand why you would want to use an online installer. This could be easier for old customers, though -- I can't be the only one who'd prefer just downloading the relevant new bits and dropping them in the appropriate places. Like it used to be.

Anyway, thanks again -- looking forward to trying out the new stuff.
