|
|
Hi All,
I have a jazz song over at ArtistCollaboration.com that is THIS CLOSE to being done. I potentially have a publisher I can at least push this song past. The only thing left is drums. The drummer I am currently using is trying his best but it's not working out very well so far. I love the sound Jamstix renders but I am not very good at making Jamstix jump through hoops. Is anyone interested in using Jamstix (or maybe even a real acoustic set) to help finish up this song? My first thought was brushes on an acoustic set... no one over there who offered seems to play an acoustic set so my second thought was sidestick on the snare, tom rolls, kick, and very light and intermittent hi-hats with little or no ride or crashes... My third and probably best thought is that SOMEWHERE out there is a drummer who can really take this song to the next level!
Here is a link to the current bedtrack:

Thanks for any thoughts,

| Nice song. I like that! Have you tried using js in "Free jam" mode, to play along w/ the song? Might get some interesting results that way. |

Lovely track! I can just imagine a smooth brushes set with a bit of hi-hat foot pedal and toms on this. Unfortunately, jamstix can't do this. There is a JazzPak add-on in the pipeline though. Maybe you should wait for this?
In the meantime, are we allowed to d/l the track and try to add something to it ourselves? I'm interested enough to see what my brushes kit on my Sound Canvas can do. |

Hi,
Thanks for the comments John and 11!
I tried to use JamStix in free jam mode... not very pretty. One thing was I needed to "cut" the bedtrack and shift it around so the click track lined up with BPM (80 BPM) and I didn't do that yet to tell the truth. The other thing was even after adjusting Jamstix I would get Fills where I didn't want any fills, et cetera.
Sure, John, download and give it a shot! This songs been pretty much on hold for the last three weeks and I'd love to get it polished off...

This is a very lovely song!
I did a quick draft of the first verse using DFHS brushes. If you like it, I wouldn't mind creating a full track for it.

Don't think I can compete with a real drummer! Great start Ralph!
Did you use Jamstix for your snippet? |

No, I did it by hand since the JazzPak logic is not ready, yet. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hi Ralph,
That's sounding pretty good for a start! In JamStix is it possible to provide seps for each part in the kit like you would for a Roland electronic kit etc? EDIT: Just curious... "by hand" meaning you are using an acoustic kit (or) you are manually setting the arrangement in Jamstix rather than using a Free Jam mode, et cetera?
One thing I've tried to get across on this song to all the musicians is "less is more" on this song... I really want the vocalist to drive the song. So I asked all the musicians to "take a back seat" to the vocalist and underplay it. With drums that would mean no big fills, et cetera. Almost everything is understated through the finale. An exception is the tom rolls as they seem to help balance out the song.
Thanks Ralph!

I had a go at it, not sure if the drums are too active though, anyway here it is:

If you mean individual outputs, yes, the Jamstix internal engine has 4 separate stereo outs and supports up to 17 total stereo outputs for hosted drum VSTi.

This was done by hand in Sonar 4. I did use concepts though that we are currently implementing for the JazzPak add-on.
In JazzPak you would define a minimalistic rhythm of brushes and hats on 1 and 4 and in the arranger you would place fills by hand on the bars that need them.

If you need more understatement I'd cut the kick out except for the title line. Here's an example.

If you need even more understatement, I'd reduce the snare activity to a simple brushing with hits on 4 and 6 only without the little embellishments that are currently present. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Hey Ralph,
Yeah, I like that a lot more! Maybe add some kick in the more dynamic sections like near the finale and leave it out elsewhere?
I haven't a clue on which would sound better as far "If you need even more understatement, I'd reduce the snare activity to a simple brushing with hits on 4 and 6 only without the little embellishments that are currently present" but potentially you could give me a sample?
Also, I truly love the tom rolls but is it possible to reduce the change in volume... the volume change is good and important, but potentially less volume change? However, I also know the drums will be further back in the mix so I will leave that to your discretion... being back in the mix will make the volume change be less noticeable.
Thanks, I know you are a busy guy!!
Jonas: Thanks for the post and the comments on the musicians... I'll pass it along! It's been a lot of fun. And we always need more talent over at ArtistCollaboration.com... maybe we can get some cross-pollination between the two sites! I like the direction Ralph is going in and would like to pursue that...

Hi Paul, I'll try to incorporate the changes you talked about in a new, full track and send it to you. This isn't much work but give me a few days because, as you said, we're quite busy here _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Excellent, Ralph, and thank you. What's not much work for you is pretty close to impossible for me! Funny how that works, ain't it!
