We've made a few quick C&V mappings for Jamstix. Grab them here:

Hey Ralph,
a big thank you !
Tried the first one, sounds good so far !
One dumb question though : I never completely understood which mappings in JS relate to which kits in DFHS / C&V.
I use either the DFHS FF 900MB or GM mapping atm, no matter what kit I choose in DFHS.
Would be nice to either supply textfiles for all mappings or even an export function in JS (export drm to clipboard) .
I completely understand there are more important things than that, maybe one of the more experienced users could do us all a favour and provide some documentation ?
Anyway, have a great day,
Rhino

There is no relationship between JS DFHS mappings and 'kits' in DFHS. The JS mappings have the proper key mapping and conserve some memory when compared to default kits in DFHS.

Thanks, Ralph !
So if I got that right, the differences show mainly in "cached mode".
Then it all starts to make sense.
I was on the wrong boat since I tend to use "uncached" kits most of the time.
Cheers,
Rhino

The mappings should all be uncached.

So how are you liking C&V compared to DFHS? How does it sound in a mix? Are they different animals altogether or is one really better than the other? Inquiring minds want to know and I figure anything you'd have to say is about as credible as it's going to get!

Well, work on Jamstix and JamBace is keeping me far too busy to really test the C&V sounds in a mix but my first impression is that C&V complements DFHS. I'd still recommend DFHS first since its sounds are more mainstream and thus more likely to be usable for a larger user group. The C&V sounds, as the name suggests, cater more to those who seek unusual or classic drum sounds. I can especially see how C&V would be THE tool of choice to generate classic 70s drum sounds.

That's all I can say at this point, can't wait to spend more time with it...

I'm still on kind of the same question as Profrhino. I just bought DFHS (and upgraded my computer to 3.2 Ghz, 2 G RAM, 160 G drive) with the goal being to try to get the Jamstix "brain" working with better sounding drum samples. I'm very impressed with the initial results!

But, I'm a guitar player. I just want to play guitar - not be a drummer or programmer. I'm not afraid to do my homework, and I will continue to work to understand Jamstix and DFHS as well as I need to to really make them work for me. I see there are a number of DFHS mappings in JS. Each mapping has a RAM amount associated with it. Is the idea there to just pick one that as closely matches the amount of free RAM you have to spare to JS for this purpose? So, if I have 1 Gig available once I have my sequencer (Cubase SX 2), other VSTs, etc etc., running, then I should choose the DFHS mapping in JS with the largest RAM, so as to get the best results. If I had less RAM available, then I'd choose say the 500 Meg map?

So, if I always have 1 G of RAM to spare to Jamstix, would I always choose the highest RAM map, or is there some other reason to use one of the other mappings?

Another question I have is that, since each drum shows up under its own track in the sequencer, I presume the way reverb is added is that I would use a reverb VST and manually set it up for each drum channel separately. That's kind of a pain, and I suppose I could do some sort of submix, grouping or handle it outside of the digital domain with an outboard reverb unit. Just new to having 16 channels of drums, so trying to get an understanding of how people usually handle it.

Sorry if these are dumb questions, but this is all new to me, and I'm just turning over rocks trying to find the clues to the best results possible.

Thanks again for a great product. Sign me up for Jambace when you have it done (or, as one post said, when you need us all for beta testers!!).

Thanks for any feedback or tips,

Andy

It all depends on how you want to use DFHS, which by the way does have a bit of a learning curve to really use its potential and to understand its mechanisms.

The mappings that come with Jamstix are mainly geared toward no-cache use of DFHS, which means real-time use. You are quite right that the RAM in the mapping name indicates how much RAM the mapping will require. DFHS has a cache mode that allows using larger kits with less RAM but the caching leads to delays that make it unusable for real-time jamming.

A good way to use DFHS/Jamstix is to use the highest mapping that won't strain your RAM/CPU so you have a good real-time experience. Once your song is done you can then use the bounce feature in DFHS to get full wave files for all mikes.

It is also easy to make new mappings off the stock mappings by adjusting things as needed and then saving the mapping in Jamstix.

Yes, you can assign FX to single channels or groups of channels on a bus.

Well, DFHS is pro-level so you'll have to learn a bit to get the most out of it. However, the results can be very rewarding!

Ralph - are your C&V or Superior mappings for Jamstix intended for use when kits are loaded into Drummer with the Superior Mapping or should the GM mapping be specified when starting the Drummer plugin?

I am getting the "unmatched key messages" light on the Drummer plugin when Jamstix has the DFHS mappings loaded and the Superior mapping is used in Drummer.

There may be some unmatched keys, we'll look into it.

I have the same problem as Phil Fee. Sa,e setup & "unmatched keys" message on most of the time. Still works well....but if there is infor that isn't getting through that would be a shame?!

Some new superior mapping incorporating the full kits with TPC would be cool....RAM ain't an issue anymore in DFHS 1.5 !

Tahnsk in advance.

As soon as we get some other stuff out of the way we'll be checking this all out...

This is really easy: just load DFHS into Jamstix, load one of the current DFHS mappings, open the DFHS GUI, check 16-bit and TPC and then change the kit as desired, loading presets or hand-changing sounds. When you're done just save the mapping in Jamstix.

Here's a conversion of the DFHS FF 900 mapping to 16-bit and TPC with full sounds (where applicable to JS):
