Hi Guys,

A while back I came across a post here where a user had asked for help in recreating the rhythm for "Babylon Sisters" by Steely Dan.

Ralph generously took the time and posted the following advice:

- use 'Custom Rock' style
- check 'Halftime'
- set '8th Kick' to about 50% or so
- set '16th Kick' to 0% or so
- set '8th Shuffle' in the transport section and raise the shuffle slider to max

I was always a fan of Steely Dan so I immediately tried the same settings out and bingo - instant Steely Dan goodness.

So here's my proposal:

would those of you that have tried recreating classic songs at some point and been successful care to share those settings with the rest of us?

Doesn't matter what decade, song or genre.

Suggestions for recreating those classic parts would help non-drummers like myself begin to understand the terminology used by my more rhythm-savvy jamstix users and could possibly become a great little online learning resource.

What do you think guys?

Dean

Good idea, Dean. I create tracks of old songs for a couple of clients that use them on gigs, and like a lot of us, I can sometimes use some help with drums and feels. I'll go back through my lists and see if I have done anything that may help someone else.

Thanks Milt - glad you can see the value in it. I'll try posting some of my own recreations as well.

I've been playing keyboards and guitar for over twenty years now and am pretty proficient in both, but still consider myself to be the worst "imitation drummer' on the planet.

Put a regular drum machine in front of me and I'll come up with something that sounds like it's been overdubbed and quantized by a guitarist - that's why I love jamstix so much.

Hopefully we can all learn and support each other in the process.

Dean

Yeah great idea.I always loved that chackado chackado sound of Hendrix's drummers Mitch Mithchell and Buddy Guy.If some classic songs were created it'd give an idea of how drummers fit fills into songs.

Yes, I also think this would be a great idea. In addition to recreating some classic drum parts for particular songs, it would be nice to have a growing library available on the website that we could just dip into for inspiration or to create a certain type of feel to a drum part. If there was a searchable list of different categories life would be so much easier when looking for that special rhythm.

This type of rhythm library might become even more useful when Jamcussion comes along and we are looking for a special Latin or African style?

I'd love to see more additions to this - the Steely Dan one is a gem.

It was.

Ralph, if you read this, is there an easy way for you to create a section for us to start capturing these rhythm re-creation settings?

I'll see what we can do. I'm hesitant to do a whole forum for this. Maybe just make it a sticky thread for now?

This would be a popular thread, if people did it. I have some drum beats done of popular songs, (mainly older ones), and mainly just the main riff for the drums, not the entire song. Did anybody come up with a format, on what to post?.. or is this a dead thread now..lol

The thread's been pretty inactive for a while, but I still think it's a noble idea.

I'm currently on three weeks holiday, so I'll have some time to focus on some classic rhythms and post them - as bad as my attempts may be.

And now that I have Jamcussion, the first track I'll aim for is "Sympathy for the Devil".

Although I have to say this - Ralph, do you have any suggestions on how to do that particular track?

Very Happy

Dean
