I am still playing around with the demo in Reaper. I think I am getting my head around creating rhythms in the rhythm tab, but I still have a few questions.
I see now that in the kick and the snare controls, unlike say the FL Studio step sequencer where you have a row of boxes that represent "1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and," you have a row for the 1-2-3-4 (quarters) and a row for the "ands" (eighths). I guess this makes sense when you are thinking in terms of probabilities, but it is a little counter-intuitive at first. One thing that was really confusing me was that when I did a free jam (audio) my guitar wasn't driving the veleocity slider enough, so there were no snare hits. When I soloed the snare channel there was no sound. When I locked the velocity and moved the slider up, I got some side sticks, but I also got what sounded more like a big booming high tom than a snare. There was nothing lighting up in the tom control area, and the sound was on the 2 and the 4, so I guess it was supposed to be a snare. Is this supposed to happen? An actual snare sounds mostly on fills.
(edit: OK, I found the snare-tom slider in the style section of the jam tab. That mystery is solved!)
I keep looking for a way to preview the rhythm in the rhythm tab. It seems like the only way to preview is to go to the arrangement window and right click on a measure, click on the note icon. Am I missing the way to preview on the rhythm tab? And if you double-click on a bar in the arrangement, it brings up the rhythm tab, but if you change the rhythm there, it seems to change it for all of the arrangement, not just that bar.
Jamstix is already making my previous drum parts sound lame, but the UI does have a learning curve. I am still trying to control it. And somehow it is very stingy with the snare!
Thanks,
John |

There is a lock icon in the rhythm tab (bottom right) that you can use to switch a rhythm to preview mode (enldess repeat and play without host).

That's correct.
We will make this easier in Jamstix 2 where you will be able to tell the bar editor if your changes should apply only to that one bar or all similar bars of the current song part.

We are simplifying and streamlining the GUI for Jamstix 2.
You may want to disable 'Reduction' in the jam tab to avoid having the snare simplified and suppressed when velocity is low. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Ralph,
Thanks, that is very helpful information. I decided to buy the Jamboree pack, and I am downloading it now. I think Jamstix will significantly improve my tracks!

You are using REAPER, right? If so, make sure the input monitoring is on on the Jamstix track in REAPER or the preview won't work. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Open the fill options (icon next to the fill frequency slider in the jam tab) and make sure nothing is checked there. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Look in the mapping tab, pull up the 'Tom' sounds and see that there are proper samples assigned in the 'sample' list. Use the 'Audit' button to audit the tom sounds. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Please send me the file rzdlog.txt from the Jamstix folder to support[at]rayzoon.com so I can figure this out. Please use reference 'Scottieboy' so I know what the mail is about. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Ralph,
This sounds like the weird problems I have been having with Reaper too, that I posted about in another thread. I have a feeling that it is a Reaper problem. I tried to try a midi jam in FL Studio, but I couldn't figure out how to route the midi from the Piano track to the track with Jamstix. Just working from the tempo, however, jamstix created an arrangement with a fill every four bars, as it was set to do. When I went back to Reaper, it was set to create a fill every 8 bars. It created the first one at bar 68, and then created one every 8 bars after that. However, not all of them played correctly. One seemed to be silent, one sounded like the regular rhythm, and one made a buzz like it was hanging.
Jamstix is clearly reacting to the midi input. It reacts to the chords, so the routing seems to be ok.
I'll ask over in the Reaper forum if people are doing ok with midi jam in Jamstix.
thanks,
John |

Well, it still doesn't create fills until late in the arrangement, but after it starts, it does them according to whatever the fill slider is set to. The other things seem to work fine, and it is creating some nice parts. I am pretty happy with Jamstix.

Sounds like the start bar in the arranger is set too high. Jamstix will not create fills until it is past that start bar (left bottom corner of arranger). Double-click that number to reset it to zero and see if it fixes the problem. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Ralph,
That fixed it. The start bar was set at 10. I don't know how that happened, because I had never even noticed that there was such a thing as a start bar! Still, it was starting to put in fills after about bar 50 or so. Weird. But now it is working as expected.
I am learning how to work this UI, but it does sound like V2 will be more intuitive. Jamstix is really exciting to have, because now the "drum problem" is pretty much solved and I can spend my time on things I am much better at, like guitar parts.
Thanks,
John |
