I'm thinking of getting the software, but wasn't sure if I should wait till 2.0 or not.
When do you forsee the release of 2.0?
Do the people who bought version 1 get free upgrade?
If not, if I purchase the software within 1 year of the 2.0 release, do I get free upgrade? (like Drumcore is doing with their new version 2.0 release)

Jamstix 2 will be released very late 2006 at the earliest but no precise release time frame exists at the moment.
Jamstix 1 owners will be offered an upgrade path to 2.0 that will be around 60% off of the normal price. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I've downloaded the demo and have been trying to read as much as I can off the forum. I'm not sure if I'm using the JS correctly, as what I'm getting is obviously not what what everyone else seems to get.
I'm sure is a user error on my part and not the fault of the software.
The way I'm trying the software is the following:
-Sonar 5
-2 tracks:
-first a midi track: a base groove that I've recorded in midid to act as the (for a lack of a better word) base of my song
-second audio track: JS.
-I've the the midi out on the midi track to JS.
Now when I have the JS on manual and then play my midi, I do here drum, but I'm not sure if that's what I need to be doing if I want JS to jam with with my base midi. I think I'm just driving JS directly instead of letting it try to jam and come up with on the fly beat.
Well, I know I have to read the manual more, just wanted to drop a line and see if I'm on the right track?
PS, do people here record their audio/midi track first and let JS come up with drum for their song, or do they start with drums first and build their song around it? I guess if you make the drums first, the the whole point of JS is somewhat defeated then, right?

There are many people who use the jam function of Jamstix sparingly or not at all. Jamstix has many aspects:
a) drum sound module
b) AI drummer (limb control, probabilities etc.)
c) arranger
d) jam drummer
So you can start off having a free jam to develop a song idea and then you may switch to manual jam to fine-tune the jam and shape the arrangement as you go along with your song production.
Some users go straight to manual jam and quickly assemble a few library grooves in the arranger by hand since they have already a concept in mind and then add fills as needed and maybe some automation.
There are many different workflows possible.
In your case I recommend you follow the instructions in the 'Free Jam Quick Start' PDF in the manual folder of your Jamstix folder for Sonar so you can experiment with MIDI free jam. Please note that this will work best with a polyphonic MIDI track (chords).
Let me know if you need more help on this or need more explanations on the underlying concepts. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Great.
How does the buying thing work? I just pay paypal and download immediately?
How do I get the downloads?
Any compatibility issues with sonar 5?
I was thinking of getting DFHS as an addition, any comments on that?
Thanks |

After you place your PayPal order we review the data and send you download links via E-mail with installation instructions. This takes anywhere from minutes to 48 hours, depending on whether you order during office hours, weekends, holidays etc. (we are on EST btw).

None that we are aware of.

Jamstix works great with DFHS. I'll let others comment on the pros and cons of DFHS itself. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Thanks,
BTW, how many built in midi grooves are included in JS(I know its potentialy infinit as it can mutate any set patterns, but I want to know what I have to start with), ie BFD has 1200, etc..
Thanks again.

There are no midi grooves included, maybe because although Jamstix has the ability to modify and alter a midi grove, first of all it´s a unique CREATOR of grooves and rhythms.
You get more than 350 preset rhythms with your purchase. This will get you started very nicely and you can go from there very easily.

LOL, ok ok. I'm gonna buy the thing anyways so no arguements from me.
On the same day that I was gonna buy BFD, I just happen to come across this (actualy some one from gearslutz talked about JS), and I've been sold eversince. I just hope I can learn to do what this product advertises adn what people rave about.
I'll buy it today.
PS, what are rhytms, and how are they different than grooves?

Jamstix is completely different than any other drum module when it comes to 'grooves' or 'rhythms'.
BFD, EZDrummer and other products advertise hundreds or thousands of grooves. However, since those are all static, most of them are just minute variations of others so that the number of actually substantially unique rhythms is much smaller.
Jamstix uses not static patterns but dynamic patterns that are rule-based. So you can load a single rhythm from the Jamstix library and due to all the humanization and variation functions in Jamstix you can have this one groove change into dozens of alternate versions. Example: click 'Always Ride' and you have a ride version, click 'Always Sidestick' and you have a sidestick version. Lower the velocity and the rhythm is 'reduced', meaning simplified in several stages etc. etc.
So the roughly 350 rhythms that come with Jamstix can translate into thousands of actual played rhythms.
Of course this doesn't take into account the 'free jam', which produces new grooves everytime.
I know you knew most of what I just said but I thought a summary would help keep things concise.
The term 'groove' or 'rhythm' in Jamstix are identical. Both refer to a set of rules that define a rhythm for the duration of a bar.
Please make sure to test the demo thoroughly before buying Jamstix. I always feel better when a user has actually done a quick song project with the JS demo all the way to mixdown and feels he/she has a good handle on the basic concepts of JS and has experienced the benefits and unique workflows it offers. I'll be happy to answer many more questions as you go along. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Cool, downloaded and ready to go.
Is it possible to have (in the manual mode, for a given groove), kicks with different velocities? |

Yes, right-click on a kick box in the rhythm tab, hold the button down and move the mouse up and down to set the velocity of that kick event. The green color will change in intensity to reflect the velocity and there will also be a numeric readout in the status bar. _________________ Ralph Zeuner
