First I'll give you my specs.
Toshiba Satelitte Laptop 1.5 Ghz
512 RAM
80 GB hard drive
RealTek AC97 Soundcard
If you need more, just ask, I'll find out...
For now, I'm going to be using the Lite version of Multitrack Studio as my host. (not sure if I want that program yet either)
So I dowloaded the demo of JS today, and once I figured out that I had to copy and paste the demo files into the VST Plugin folder of MTS.....I finally had it up and running.
I played the .mid track, and was messing with JS, and I quickly found the first, of probably many questions. If I stopped play of the .mid track, JS would make horrible pops and clicks. It was unlistenable. Why does the track need to be playing for JS to come thru clearly?
Thanks in advance,
Scott |

Hi Scott,
I am assuming you are sending a GM-drum MID track into Jamstix. If so, did you check 'Mute Brain' in the jam tab?
What ASIO driver are you using? Please try the free ASIO4ALL driver (www.asio4all.com) and see if it helps. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Not sure about either of those....
GM-drum MID track? What I did was added a new track (.mid) in MTS, then dragged VST Plugin to the Port on that new track, then selected jamstix, and that was it....
the driver was what came with the computer. under Driver Provider, in the hardware section of my sound control panel, it says Realtek Semiconductor Corp.
or maybe its a Legacy Driver....? sorry i'm bad with this stuff.

I am not familiar with MTS but what you're looking for is a setup screen in it where you get to choose your audio driver. Select 'ASIO4ALL' and see if it works better.
Let's do these test steps:
- load Jamstix into MTS
- set Jamstix to 'free jam'
- hit Play in MTS and then Stop after JS played for a bit.
Btw, Realtek AC97 is IMHO not a good platform for music production. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

ok, I figured out how to get the ASIO driver detected thru MTS...
I loaded Jamstix
set it to free jam
it played just like you said, then I stopped it thru the host....
so far so good....
i know Realtek isnt that good, but for now, it'll due....so far no problems.
BTW, when I choose the VST plugin, I have a choice of jamstix demo, or audioM8.....i've been choosing jamstix demo..... |

Glad it's running. Let me know if I can assist in any other way as you explore Jamstix.
audioM8 is a little VST plugin that you can insert into an audio track to have volume information sent to Jamstix automatically for an audio free jam. Please see the 'Free Jam Quick Start' PDF in the manual folder for more details. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

Scottieboy, It works well with MTS for me as you most likely already know from the other board. there are tons of cool things to use and learn, just try stuff.
I usually set it to freejam then after it makes a drum track i then set it to manual jam and edit the crazies out, and add intro fills and ending.. I use alot of premade midi tracks and i place the VSt in the drum track and allow it to jam to it, sometime i mute the brain in manual jam and let it follow the midi file, or just make a click track and let it jam over that.
If you have simple question on MTS feel free to post here or even at the MTS board and we will try to help.
Glad to see you took the plunge i can't get enough Jamstix. |

Thanks for the reply Robo.
I can see that you enjoy JS. I still need to play with it more, and will need some guidance. Was using Free jam, I inserted a click track above the JS track on MTS, hit play and had JS go while I checked different boxes to find something I liked. It got hung up a couple times with me hitting stop in JS, instead of MTS. It threw off its sync or something, and JS would have the word "DISABLED!" at the top.
So I'd have to reboot MTS to get it all to work again. So I'd do that, insert another click, but this time with a faster tempo, but it didnt sound faster, and it was at 300 bpm. ...SO getting a beat I liked was actually kind of hard to do.
and it would seem to just hit random tom hits, and cymbals, when I didn't even have any of those boxes checked.....I assume those are fills, and I saw they were so in the Arranger, but I didnt put those there, and it was uncalled for. How do I get it to keep a more steady beat?
after that....I decided to take out the demo, and just import the audioM8 so it could recognize my playing...to see how that would effect JS behavior..
But I had a hard time seeing the volume dial on the audioM8 move when I plugged in. It move once or twice, but then it was stuck to the left, and wouldn't move. I wasn't going thru a pre-amp, just into the 1/8 mic input could that be the case? Robo, if you could maybe give me a walk-thru on that, I'd appreciate it. Something that would explain step-by-step, to get me in real Free Jam mode, and recording my guitar and/or the drums to a track...
I tried to make that as clear as possible, it's alot. I do still understand that I may eventually need to get an external interface to use instead of the RealTek AC97 sound card...but would like to see the extent of my capabilities without one first.....
Thanks for your time. |

That is really odd. 'Disabled' is a protection mechanism of Jamstix that you should never see unless your DLL was manipulated.
Please see if this newer version helps:

- move 'fill frequency' all the way left
- move 'Accentuation' all the way left
- move 'Cymbal Hits' all the way left

Makre sure you have a good, strong volume on the track. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

I originally saved the demo file in my Program Files. It made a folder called steinberg which contained everything. I could not see JS as a VST Plugin. So I copied the steinberg file to the Plugin folder of MTS. That solved it, but maybe thats what was manipulated?
SHould I uninstall and delete the previous file I downloaded before I try your newer version? |

Your copying is okay, I don't think you need to do anything else.
Please unzip the X9-5 demo file into the folder that contains jamstix.dll and let it overwrite it. _________________ Ralph Zeuner

oh boy....
ok, um, still got the DISABLED thing....and its acting totally weird now.
THis might all have to do with MultiTrack Studio, and I know your not familiar with it, so I look forward to Robo's response too......
JS started playing when I opened up to piano roll view. I hadn't pushed play yet. And while playing in Free Jam, it would play every bar as a fill. When I went to Manual Jam, it played no fills, just a smooth redundant beat. I liked that actually....
But JS quickly minimized and stopped playing when I clicked back on the MTS page. All the while, I still hadnt pushed play on MTS. But then, I did, and resulted in nothing. Not one sound.
I also experimented with opening a midi bass line for JS to play along with, and only JS would play, not the midi track.....?? |
