I bought JamStix a few days ago - the Studio Pak plus Odd Times. Stylistically I'm more into jazz and folk/rock styles versus heavy rock (though do dig Prog Rock, hence the Odd Times and "Bill Bruford" pack purchase). I like the notion of the Song Builder to lay out and view my arrangement. But for most songs that I conceive of, the "Intro" is really a full instrument cycle before the vocal or instrumental melody "verse". Intro in Song Builder is more what I would consider a "Count in". Is there some way to create my own parts, or a better way for the workflow I'm after?

Why not just add the needed extra number of bars to the beginning of your first song part? You don't have to use an Intro song part.

The power/energy settings for this intro would be different than the first verse. Think of a song like Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run". The intro is basically the full band setting up the anthem feel. Verse 1 brings that level down and simplifies things, etc.

By the same token, the ending would be an extended instrumental section. (Could reuse intro in this case.)

Then just add an additional song part similar to your first verse that is the proper number of bars needed in place of an "Intro" with a different player preset. Adjust the added parts' power setting higher than the first verse in the Song Sheet "Power" window.

Can I somehow create my own part names - like "InstruIntro"? It's nice to view songbuilder as a song outline for songs that are in process for a while - would rather know the function from the name, rather than unlink the parts and know that the first "Verse" was actually for the intro.

Yes you can. Just double click the song part you want to rename and give it any name you'd like in the window that opens.
