For one of my first Jamstix projects I am trying something a bit different! I am trying to make a simple Jamcussion track for a cover of this song ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_j0EA_YH61I )
The percussion in the video looks like a Bodhrán and starts at around 1 minute.
I am hoping to use a Cajón in Jamstix unless there is something better (any suggestions welcome).
How would I go about getting the style of rhythm used in the video?
I have tried using only Jamcussion with Cajon Style, Handy drummer and Cajon kit but the result seems far too busy. I have built a song from the various parts which fits the cover track.
The video sounds like 4/4 but could also be 12/8 as I can hear triplets on each beat and that seems to be what the Bodhrán player is playing. I have tried turning up the swing value to get that tum-te tum-te tum-te tum-te kind of rhythm from a straight 4/4 beat.
Any thoughts would be welcome. |

| I can't dig into this right at the moment but the first thing I would do it to remove everything else but the Cajon from the kit. Always remove instruments from the kits that you do not intend to use to keep things focused and to prevent things from sounding like a Percussion section falling down a staicase. |

Ah, now I am getting somewhere...
I tried a few 12/8 styles and the Saba one seems to work well with all parts set to 100% Swing on 8th and 16ths. It also sounds good with only 8ths but only 16ths sounds wrong. I can get some variation by changing the 8ths/16ths selection throughout the song.
Now I just need to work out how to change the tempo at various bars near the end where the break/hold occurs. |
