Hi,

does anyone use the above combination ? I am having some problems/questions ....

1. I cannot record clips in Ableton's session-view. Jamstixx seems to be tied to the 'global' timer and doesnot react to the clip's looping boundaries.

2. When I open a new session track by dragging the ableton plug-in into the session-view a new midi track is opened. When I try to record some drumming Jammstixx's midi-LED is flashing but no midi-data is recorded.
I know that Jamstixx should be saving it's drumming by itself. But I think the way to go in session mode is recording a clip incl. midi-output of Jamstixx while it is playing. For looping the clip I think Jammstixx should be in 'drumming mode' so it doesnot use its 'brain'. As far as midi output is concerned: I already tried to drag a bar into a midi track. Everything worked fine but no midi data appeared in the track --- no errors.

3. When I save an ableton project with a Jammstixx track the track itself is saved, but when I reopen the project the Jammstixx track is opened but not the Jamstixx plug-in.

How are you working with Jamstixx and Ableton ? Are there configurations that I should know ? I really would like to use Jamstixx in Ablton's session mode, because I nearly only use this mode. I havn't tested yet, how Jamstixx is behaving in Ableton's arrangement view.

hoping for some answers

Holger

Hi hbu_stripantiqua
I use the same combo. It would be handy if you do a print screen. What I do is open a midi track for Jamstix. In the box it says midi from and audio to underneith.Create an audio track to receive sound.

1. what do you need to see on the screenshots ?

2. If I understood right you first open a Jamstixx track by dragging the Jamstixx VST into the session view. Then you open a new miditrack that you configure to receive midi from the Jammstixx track ?

thanks

You have to do it like this:
1. Drag Jamstix (the instrument) to a midi track in session view. Here all the composing is done, but you will hear no sound.
2. To get sound, open an audio track in session view. In the routing menu specify that this audio track gets its audio from the Jamstix track.
In the audio track you can record clips now.

This is how Ableton Live has always worked.

You have to do it like this:
1. Drag Jamstix (the instrument) to a midi track in session view. Here all the composing is done, but you will hear no sound without routing through an audio track.

@Doc: Thank you for your answer.

1. I Drag Jamstix to a midi track, load a song and output is send to master .... I hear sound immediately.

2. I know, that I could 'record' Jammstix's output in an audio clip .. but I would like to record the midi data Jamstix is producing during playing. So I could record midi-clips that are editable. And as far as I understood Jamstix in 'Drumming Mode' should be able to play these midi data.
How can I accomplish that ?

Update: I just installed the update 3.1.2 for Jamstix. Now it's looping correctly in session view and in arrangment view. But still I want to know how to 'record' Jamstix's midi data.

Thanks in advance

Holger

Hi,

quote from Jamstix 3 Manual:

9.7 MIDI Output Usage

Jamstix outputs all its notes as MIDI to the host. This means if your host supports VSTi MIDI output routing, you can record the output of Jamstix to a MIDI track in your host and edit it or send it to a different drum module for playback. It also means that you can route the MIDI output of Jamstix to the MIDI input of another module in real-time instead of sub hosting it in Jamstix. This is a bit more complex to set up then just loading it into Jamstix but can be advantageous if the module has stereo/mono mixed audio outputs or you need direct host-tomodule
access for automation etc. Also, if you get any crashes with a specific plugin and host using subhosting, use the MIDI output routing instead of subhosting.

So it must be posssible to route Jamstix's midi output. But I am not able to figure out, how to do it by myself because of the lack of experience.

Can anybody help ?

Thanks

Holger

Hi,

it's working now. I can make midi clips in Ableton's session view and play them back through Jamstix.

1. Drag Jamstix VST Module into the Session View or an existing miditrack of Ableton Live
2. open a new miditrack and configure the 'midi from' to Jamstix-3 (that's the name how your Jamstix track will be named by Ableton Live) and the 'midi to' also to Jamstix-3.
3. put the newly created miditrack in record mode and start recording a midi clip. When you stop recording the midi clip, Jamstix willnot stop playing because the global timer is still running. You can stop it, if you like.
4. Now you can re-setup Jamstix (new style, new drummer, new dynamics ....) for your next midi clip.
5. After you have recorded all clips that you need for your project, you can disarm your miditrack, put Jamstix into drumming mode (by disabling normal-, midi- and audiojam). Put your Jamstix track into record mode.

Now you are ready to play/change between your clips/scenes in Ableton Live like you are used to and every single Drum(Jamstixx) clip will be played . I like this solution better than recording audioclips by simply recording Jamstix's audio output.

thank you

Holger

I can't seem to get this to work in Live 8, as outlined by hbu_stripantiqua. The general idea is to capture the MIDI note performance generated by Jamstix, recording that note data into a MIDI track.

I have Jamstix 3.5 playing in a Session View clip. MIDI output is enabled on the options page of the plugin. I have another MIDI track with MIDI input routed from the Jamstix instance. When I start the MIDI track recording, no notes appear. However, if I insert notes into the Jamstix track piano roll, those do transfer into the new MIDI track.

As a sanity check, I just tested the same thing in energyXT: I patched the MIDI out of Jamstix to the MIDI in of a sequencer, and hit record. Note data starts to appear immediately.

Clearly, Live is not passing the MIDI output from Jamstix to the other MIDI track. I'm not sure why, but something must be configured wrong. Any ideas?
