I've got JS2 ... right now to lay down a simple beat (with the 1st beat being louder and a different sound than the other 2nd-4th drum beats), I'm doing this really dumb thing - recording my Cubase metronome as audio.

How do I use JS2 to do the same thing? I don't want anything fancy like in or out of the pocket, just the equivalent of a metronome beat -

Thanks!

JS2 does not have a metronome because most hosts have it. So I'd use the Cubase metronome.

OK, thanks, Ralph. Can I ask for some help accessing a drum sound from JS2 to use as a metronome?

The problem is that the Cubase metronome is a musical note, and it kind of throws me off when I'm playing. I do have the option of having Cubase access a sound, I just have to point it to the right folder, I believe.

I'd like to, let's say, use a kick for the 1st beat, and a snare for the others (the Cubase metronome lets you have two sounds). Could you tell me please which folder these sounds might be in? Are they the RZD files in DATA >> SOUNDS ? I'm kind of afraid to point to those files without being sure ... Rolling Eyes

Thanks!

Cubase cannot use Jamstix RZD files. You'll need to use WAV files that fit your tastes.

So this is turning a lot more complicated than I was hoping for ... are you sure you don't want to put a metronome in JS3? Very Happy

******************************************
BTW - here is the question I posted in the Cubase forum about this, if anyone here has an idea to help, please feel free to chip in - thanks! Very Happy

Hi - SX3 here -

I'm having trouble with the metronome. The default tone is too "musical", I get kind of confused when I'm playing music to it. I'd like to use a drum beat for the metronome, but I've been having problems, I was hoping maybe someone could help me out a bit please.

First what I did is I sent the metronome beat out to my Motif, then recorded a drum sound back as audio into SX3. I'm not happy with that solution for several reasons: 1) It seems like an awful lot of work just to get a metronome beat, and I'd have to do that for every BPM and project, surely it's not that complicated!, 2) if I do any cutting/editing of the tracks, it messes up the drum beats in projects that change tempo, and 3) There are timing issues... I haven't sorted them out yet, but besides the initial sliding of the audio to compensate for the delay out to the Motif and back, I get the feeling that the audio and project beats get out of sync the longer the project is played. I haven't quite looked into this in detail yet, but I think it is a problem.

So I was wondering how to use the other metronome option, where you point to a folder. My question is ... where do I get something to put in the folder? I don't have any drum files that I know of. What would be in the file - just one hit, starting at exactly the beginning of the file? Should I try to make one from the Motif drum sounds, or download, or ...?

Thanks in advance for clearing up my confusion!

Just to bring it full circle, here is an answer from one of the Cubase gurus on how to get a decent drum sound out of the Cubase metronome:

*********************************************************
Once you have any sound that suits you, recorded/imported into Cubase, edit it (it could even be part of a much larger piece of audio), such that the start of the sound is "tight", and don't waste any extra silence at the end, then use the audio option "Bounce Selection", which will create a new file of your edited version. Place that wherever you wish, and point to it in Metronome Setup.
Don't forget to then save it as your startup template.

Alexis
why don't you just use a basic drum pattern in Jamstix as your metronome? If you use the Charlie model it works fine if you don't have it playing any fills. If you have a song structure worked out you could use transition fills to help you know when you are moving from one part of the song to another.
I find this works much better than a metronome, for me anyway.

then when you have recorded other instrumental parts you can go back and refine the drum settings to make it more interesting to fit with your song. At that point you can substitute any drummer model.

Just a thought to save you time, if you want to get a drum sound out of a metronome
