Hi gang,
Wanting to challenge myself (and Jamstix,) I decided to try replacing some drum-machine tracks with Jamstix. Below is a link to the files.
Be sure to listen to the short mp3 first, then my rough remix with Jamstix drums.
http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=491721
Some of you n-Track users may be familiar with the Artist & Song (Mike Cressey/On a Roll) as it's an n-Track demo tune.
I'm just blown away with how Jamstix breathed life into it. The drums are ALL Jamstix. (I did edit a bit in the MIDI track to move things around.) The tricky part was manually creating a tempo track for Jamstix to sync-up to the .wav files.
Considering that I'm not much of a drummer, I know Jamstix saved me hours & hours (perhaps even days) of trying to create MIDI drum tracks using my pad set!
I'm not happy with the snare flam at 2:22 but that's my fault and I consider it a "happy accident" as I feel it helps it sound more like a real drummer.
What do you think?
Edit 5/18/06: Duh, I just noticed the "Song Exposition" thread and realize I should have posted this there. Sorry.

Very nice!
I think Jamstix improves the song performance-wise by 100%! |

Hey Kenny,
that sounds great. Have you posted that over at teh n-Track forums so people can see what JS can do for a drum track to bring a song to life?
well done.

Thanks for positive comments, gang.
Over 120 views but only 4 comments, though??? I guess I didn't impress as many others as much as I impressed myself, ha! Being such a noob, I was just proud, maybe too proud, of the results. (I know, it has a long way to go, afterall.) I'm going to keep on working on it for two reasons:
1. It's fun! (And very addictive.)
2. I haven't composed/recorded anything of my own that's worth sharing, yet!
Rich,
It wouldn't be proper of me to post this in the n-Track forums - I'm not an n-Track user - I used Cubase SX. (I don't believe I told that to Mike.) And, I don't even know if it would have been possible to create the required MIDI tempo track using n-Track???
Any other comments would be appreciated

I took a listen, and wow! Very nice; the drums on the original seem flat and mechanical, and Jamstix made it come alive.
I was expecting to hear some ride on the chorus, but it works the way it is. After focusing on the drums for a bit, my ears wandered off to listen to the guitars & harmonies -- a mark of solid drumming for me |

| How did you go about doing that? Keywords or did you manually program the tracks? Did you let it write them on it's own? |

Did you miss it?
You mentioned the harmonies - all created by the DeccaBuddy plug-in from Akai. I think they sound OK, except the vocal intro, where you can hear the mechanics - not so good for acapella work! | Robitaille20 wrote: | | How did you go about doing that? I didn't make note (mentally or physically) of the process. I know I selected "basic" for the rythm, so I guess that was in Keyword Jam??? Then, edited the pattern in the "Rythm" tab, to get the kick on the right beat, selected quarter notes for the hats, etc. Then, in the "Arrangement" tab, I created copies of the basic pattern & setup different ones for the switch to ride, open hat, etc. Then I told JS to put fills in where I wanted. After I recorded the output to a midi track, I did edit a bit more on the fills, crashes, etc. I even managed to screw up some stuff (imagine that!) that I really should go in & fix.

Hi Kenny,
Very nice work overall. Jamstix really did add a lot of life. The drum machine in the original wasn’t too bad though. If I could make a few suggestions:
Try lowering the snare and the hi-hat levels in the mix just a hair. It would balance things out better.
When the keyboard part comes in it’s jarring and pulls you away from the overall mix. It should be quieter, and more subtle. Could you possibly use a different sound? The “Farfisa” vibe clashes with the rest of the acoustic feel. Maybe something darker or more B3’ish?
I see what you mean about the mechanical sound of the harmonies at the beginning of the song. In the rest of it though, the Akai Decca Buddy really sounded pretty good. I will have to check that out.
Good work, please keep sharing.

Kev,
Thanks for the comments. As I stated, it's a rough mix! Yes, it needs a lot more work. I don't care for the keyboard sound, either. Unfortunately, I can't (easily) change it to something more appropriate - that would be taking away from Mike's performance and I don't feel I have to right to do that. BUT I may just leave the mute button on for that channel!
I was just laid off from my job! So, for now, I gotta spend more time on a job hunt... stay tuned.
KC
